Happy workplaces bring huge benefits, not just for employees, but for organisations as well!
People who are happy at work report greater life satisfaction, better health, stronger relationships and a greater sense of purpose. They also have positive influences on the organisations in which they work.
Research shows that happy employees are liked more by their colleagues, earn more money, and are more productive than their less happy co-workers. They also stay with their employers longer, are more punctual, are better able to manage stress, and have fewer sick days.
And it doesn’t stop there. Our emotional wellbeing influences our physical health, which can also influence our performance at work. And more importantly, our happiness is contagious. Those happy vibes spread to others at work, at home, and in our communities.
So what’s the problem? It’s a big one. A lot of us are desperately unhappy at work. Corporate research giant Gallup revealed that Australian workers are among the most dissatisfied in the world. 60% of our workforce are “not engaged”, meaning they do just enough at work to avoid getting fired. Worse still, 16% are “actively disengaged”. These are the people who hate their boss, are unproductive at work and spread negativity to others within their team. Almost one in five Australian employees fit that description. This workplace malaise is costing the economy about $54.8 billion a year.
